About Ioana Avery, LMFT, CST

Ioana Avery

I’m Ioana Avery, a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sex Therapist helping individuals and couples break free from shame, trauma, and emotional disconnection to reclaim their authentic, embodied selves.

My passion is helping people confront what feels impossible such as shame, trauma, conflict, questions about identity, and desire so they find their way back to truth, vitality, and connection.

The Making Of A Challenger

I was born and raised in Bucharest, Romania during the final years of communism. I grew up watching people stand in food lines, live without heat or electricity, and learn to survive by keeping their heads down. Violence and fear were part of daily life, and from a young age I could feel how helpless people became when they believed they had no choice. In that world, psychology became my lifeline and a way to make sense of pain and power.

Those early years made me a challenger. I learned to speak up when it wasn’t safe, to question everything, and to trust my own instincts. That same drive lives in my work today. I don’t follow systems blindly. Whether it’s culture, politics, or medicine, I believe healing comes from knowing yourself deeply and deciding what makes sense from within.

After leaving Romania, I spent years traveling the world as a flight attendant, living in places like Abu Dhabi, Cape Town, and Doha before finally settling in Texas. I fell in love with the openness here and the warmth, optimism, and the belief that anything is possible if you work for it. I’m proud to call the United States my home.

This country gave me the chance to build a life that once felt unimaginable, and I carry that gratitude into every session I hold.

Now, as a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sex Therapist, I help people do what I’ve had to do again and again, and face what feels impossible, meet it with courage, and build something new from it.

I was the first in my family to earn a degree, something that still fills me with pride. My path wasn’t easy or traditional. I earned my first Bachelor’s in Social Work in Romania, then a Bachelor’s in Psychological Counseling from the University of South Africa while working as a flight attendant and moving from country to country. I studied for exams in Abu Dhabi, Doha, and Houston while my husband and I were growing our family, determined to keep going no matter what. When we eventually settled in Texas, I completed my Master’s in Marriage and Family Therapy at the University of Houston–Clear Lake, where my calling finally found its shape.

Therapy, Without Apologies

I’m not the kind of therapist who nods politely and lets you circle your pain forever. I challenge my clients with honesty, empathy, and precision because I know that’s what transformation demands.

You’ll find no “coffee and croissant” couples work here. I help partners build relationships that are deeply connected, emotionally intelligent, sexually alive, and spiritually grounded. I work with high-functioning, high-achieving adults. Both men and women who are successful on paper but starving for authenticity, intimacy, and peace.

My clients often come to me in chaos: a marriage collapsing, an affair exposed, a sexuality misunderstood, a self that feels foreign. Together, we untangle the noise and get to what’s real. I won’t let you stay on the surface. Instead, I’ll bring you into the heart of what hurts and help you meet it with compassion.

My Therapeutic Approach

I don’t believe in rigid methods or cookie-cutter therapy. Every person deserves an approach that fits their story, not the other way around.

My approach is integrative, drawing from the best of science and experience:

Accelerated Experiential Dynamic Psychotherapy (AEDP)

Internal Family Systems (IFS)

EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART), and Brainspotting

Imago, Gottman, and Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT)

Pragmatic Experiential Therapy for Couples (PET-C)

I blend somatic work, neuroscience, and relational depth to help clients regulate their nervous systems, heal attachment wounds, and embody their authentic selves. This is deep work and is the kind that changes how you love, how you see yourself, and how you move through the world.

Who I Am Outside The Room

Friends call me “the soul of the party.” I’m a bit of a firecracker full of energy, humor, and heart. My husband of sixteen years still says he never knows what to expect from me, and he loves that. I’m a mix of Cardi B and Jung encompassing bold, playful, and unapologetically deep.

I’m also a mother of two, a world traveler, a dancer, and a lifelong student of psychology and spirituality. I live what I teach incorporating self-inquiry, accountability, and the pursuit of meaning into the everyday. My life is built intentionally, from my morning routines to my relationships, because I believe we all have the power to design the lives we crave.

For Those Ready To Bloom

Therapy with me isn’t easy, but it’s real. I’ll meet you where you are with warmth, candor, and unwavering belief in your capacity to grow. Together, we’ll clear the noise and get you back to what matters most: living, loving, and feeling fully alive.
