For Couples Who Care, But Feel Stuck

Couples don’t usually reach out to me for a couples intensive because things are mildly uncomfortable or they’re worried something is “wrong” between them. In fact, most of the couples I work with still care deeply about each other. The problem is, they no longer know how to “fix” what feels difficult between them.

A couples intensive is an individualized, focused approach to couples therapy that gives us the time, space, and depth to discover what’s happening on the surface between you, as well as the emotional truth underneath it.

When Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough

Couples usually move toward an intensive for one of two reasons.

The truth is, you don’t need to be on the brink of separation to benefit from an intensive. You just need to recognize that the pace of weekly therapy isn’t matching the urgency or depth of what you’re living.

When Weekly Therapy Isn’t Enough

I focus closely on the dynamic between you. Traditional therapy allows patterns to unfold gradually across sessions. An intensive gives us extended time together so we can stay with those patterns long enough to actually shift them.

During our time together, we follow the conversation beneath the argument. We identify where you start missing each other, where desire drops off, where fear or defensiveness takes over. Instead of circling those moments week after week, we work through them while they’re alive in the room.

Together, we look at:

In an intensive, once we begin the work, momentum builds quickly. We stay with the hard conversations long enough to reach what’s underneath them. That kind of depth can take months to access in traditional couples therapy.

Why The extended format matters

In weekly therapy, progress often unfolds in pieces. You touch something important, then return to work, parenting, and daily life. By the next session, the emotional temperature has shifted.

An intensive allows us to remain inside the process. There’s less resetting, less re-explaining. We can track what happens in real time and respond to it immediately.

That continuity changes the pace of repair. You aren’t starting over each week. Instead, you’re building on what just happened.

What An Intensive Is Not:

An intensive is not a quick fix. It doesn’t guarantee that everything will be resolved in a few days.

It’s not a courtroom. I’m not assigning blame, forcing forgiveness, or putting one partner on trial.

It’s not a communication workshop. You won’t be graded on whether you use the “right” phrases. And it doesn’t replace longer-term therapy when a relationship needs ongoing work.

What it does offer is extended, uninterrupted time. Time to face what’s happening without rushing. Time to work through it while it’s still alive in the room.

That experience often changes the tone of the relationship. You leave with a different understanding of each other and a stronger base to build from.

Who This Work Is For

Intensives tend to work best for couples who are willing to look directly at what’s happening between them.

You don’t have to be certain about staying or leaving. You don’t have to be in agreement, but you do need the capacity to stay in the room, tolerate difficult conversations, and engage honestly for extended periods of time.

This format suits couples who want to move through something, not around it. Who are ready to examine their own patterns as much as their partner’s, and who understand that depth requires sustained attention.

If you’re looking for quick tools or surface-level strategies, weekly therapy may be a better fit. An intensive is designed for couples prepared to work in a concentrated, focused way.

Understanding Logistics

Because every couple is different, the structure of an intensive depends on what we’re working with. We’ll determine the length (typically several hours across one or two days), breaks, and pacing based on what your relationship needs.
Intensives are available both online across Texas and in person.

If you’re unsure whether an intensive is the right next step, we start with a consultation to understand what’s happening in your relationship and what the work would require.

Couples Intensives In Houston & Across Texas FAQs

What happens during an intensive?
We spend several hours following the emotional pattern of your relationship, not just the stories or arguments. The time allows us to stay with moments where you normally shut down in weekly therapy.
Yes. I work with both partners to understand the emotional landscape of the affair and what led to it, what it meant, how it impacted each of you.
No. I’m not here to declare a “right” and “wrong” partner. I’m here to help you both see the emotional truth of what’s happening between you.
If both partners can remain physically safe and emotionally engaged enough to do the work, yes. We determine this together before scheduling.
Not necessarily. Some couples continue with weekly sessions and others use the intensive for clarity before deciding next steps.
Absolutely. Many couples seek out an intensive after an affair or when one or both partners is aware of a deeper intimate challenge between them. Desire discrepancies are not only common, but they are one of the leading reasons why couples enter therapy in the first place.

When you factor the number of therapy sessions most couples require to reach similar goals achieved in an intensive couples therapy session, the numbers balance out.

Everyone is different of course, and there isn’t a prescriptive cost or number of sessions a couple needs to find the healing they desire. But, what we know is that whether you complete an intensive over 1 or 2 days or you are in couples therapy for weekly sessions for a year, financially they are about the same and in some cases, weekly therapy costs more.

The real question to ask yourself is about time. These are designed for couples who want real movement and depth in a shorter amount of time. That benefit alone is often why couples ask for this kind of work.
