Discernment Counseling In Katy, TX

For Couples Who Are Not Sure Whether To Stay Married Or Divorce

Finding Clarity When Your Marriage Feels Stuck

You do not have to pretend you are ready for couples therapy if you are not. You also do not have to make a divorce decision from exhaustion, anger, fear, or years of feeling stuck.

Discernment Counseling is a short-term, structured process for couples who are standing at a crossroads. One of you may be leaning out of the marriage, thinking about separation or divorce. The other may be leaning in, wanting to preserve the relationship and hoping there is still something worth fighting for.

This is not traditional couples therapy. We are not starting with communication skills, date nights, or rebuilding intimacy. We are starting with a more honest question.

Should we even be trying to save this marriage?

If you are stuck in ambivalence, Discernment Counseling gives you a clear place to slow down, tell the truth, look at what happened, and decide what comes next.

Maybe every conversation turns into the same fight. Maybe one of you has emotionally checked out while the other is desperately trying to hold the marriage together. Maybe there has been an affair, years without intimacy, constant conflict, addiction, or a slow erosion of connection over time.

Maybe divorce is being mentioned more often than either of you ever imagined. Or maybe neither of you knows what you want anymore. Whatever brought you here, living in limbo is exhausting. Discernment Counseling helps you step out of the confusion and make a thoughtful decision instead of reacting from fear, anger, guilt, or hopelessness.

When Couples Therapy Does Not Feel Like The Right Fit

Most couples therapy assumes both partners want to work on the relationship. But what happens when one partner is saying, “I want to try,” and the other is thinking, “I don’t know if I can do this anymore”?

In those situations, couples therapy often becomes frustrating. One partner feels pressured. The other feels desperate. Neither feels understood.

Discernment Counseling starts with reality instead of assumptions. We are not pretending both partners are in the same place. We are helping both people understand the marriage clearly before deciding whether it makes sense to attempt repair.

Who Is Discernment Counseling For?

If you’re feeling stuck between staying and leaving, this process is designed for exactly that space.

Discernment Counseling may be right for you if:

Discernment Counseling is not about staying married at all costs. It is also not about using therapy as a soft launch for divorce. It is about taking the decision seriously.

The Three Paths In Discernment Counseling

In Discernment Counseling, we are looking at three possible paths.

Path One: Stay As You Are For Now

This does not mean everything is fine. It means you are not choosing divorce right now, and you are not choosing a six-month commitment to couples therapy right now.

Some couples choose to keep the marriage as it is for a period of time because of children, finances, family stability, timing, or because they are not ready to make a bigger decision. This can still be a valid outcome if both partners understand what they are choosing.

Path Two: Move Toward Separation Or Divorce

Divorce is not treated as a failure in this process.

Sometimes one partner has reached the end of what they are willing or able to do. Often the marriage has been painful for too long. Sometimes there is no willingness to change, no shared commitment, or no real desire to continue.

If divorce is the path, the goal is to reach that decision with more certainty, more honesty, and a better understanding of what each person needs to learn from the relationship. Because divorce without insight often repeats itself in the next relationship.

Path Three: Commit To Couples Therapy For Six Months

This path means divorce is taken off the table for a defined period of time, usually six months, while both partners make a serious effort in couples therapy.

This is not casual therapy. It requires willingness, accountability, emotional effort, and a genuine commitment to look at the marriage differently. Both partners must be willing to examine their own behavior, their own patterns, and their own role in what happened.

Choosing Path Three does not guarantee the marriage will survive. It means both people are willing to make a real attempt before deciding.

Why Couples Choose Me For Discernment Counseling

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and Certified Sex Therapist who works extensively with couples facing infidelity, emotional disconnection, sexless marriages, chronic conflict, intimacy concerns, trauma, and divorce decisions.

I am Certified in Imago Relationship Therapy and trained in several relational and trauma-informed approaches, including the Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy, Relational Life Therapy, Practical Experiential Therapy for Couples, EMDR, Brainspotting, Internal Family Systems, IFIO-informed work, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, AEDP, DBT, ACT, and mindfulness-based therapy. My approach is direct, structured, and compassionate.

I will not pressure you to stay married. I will not pressure you to divorce. My role is to help both of you slow down, look honestly at what happened, understand your own contributions to the relationship, and make a decision you can live with.

Many couples come to me after years of feeling stuck, after previous therapy has not helped, or after months of going in circles without clarity. Discernment Counseling gives us a structured way forward.

What Makes My Approach Different?

Direct, structured, and compassionate. That is the foundation of this process with me. At the same time, there is little room for hiding behind vague stories, blame, or perpetual ambivalence. I have no interest in letting the two of you spend months going in circles without moving toward greater clarity.

This process asks both partners to take personal accountability.

We will work toward recognizing your contribution to the breakdown of the marriage:

These questions are not about blame. They are about understanding. Because clarity rarely comes from focusing only on what your partner did wrong.

A marriage does not fall apart in a vacuum. Even when one person has done something deeply damaging, there is still value in understanding the full relationship pattern so each person can move forward with more clarity. That is the work.

Not endless talking or surface-level “communication.” I will not let you get away with pretending. This is clear, structured, honest discernment.

What To Expect In Discernment Counseling

Discernment Counseling is usually between one and six sessions. Sessions are longer than traditional therapy sessions, usually between 90 minutes and two hours. Most couples meet weekly, although the timing can depend on emotional availability, finances, and scheduling.

Each session follows a structured process:

We meet together first. Then I meet individually with each partner. Then we come back together.

The structure matters because it keeps the process focused and prevents the session from turning into another fight, another debate, or another round of “who is right?”

During the process, each partner has space to speak honestly. The leaning-out partner has room to say, “I am not sure I want this anymore,” while the leaning-in partner has room to say, “I want to try.”

At the same time, both partners are asked to look inward instead of focusing only on what their spouse did, what hurt, or what they wish the other person would change. The question becomes: what are you willing to understand, own, and do differently if you choose to stay in this marriage or move forward into another chapter of your life?

Discernment Counseling Is Not For Everyone

This process may not be the right fit if both of you are already fully committed to couples therapy. In that case, traditional couples therapy may be the better option.

It may also not be the right fit if one partner has already made a final divorce decision and is only using the process to announce it.

Discernment Counseling requires enough openness to explore the question honestly. You do not have to know what you want. You do have to be willing to participate sincerely.

Discernment Counseling In Katy, TX FAQs:

What is discernment counseling?

Discernment Counseling is a short-term process for couples who are unsure whether to stay married, separate, divorce, or commit to couples therapy. It is designed to help both partners gain clarity and confidence about the next step.

Couples therapy assumes both partners are ready to work on the relationship. Discernment Counseling does not make that assumption. It is for couples where one or both partners are unsure whether working on the marriage is the right next step.

Discernment Counseling is for couples on the brink of separation or divorce, especially when one partner is leaning out of the marriage and the other is leaning in. It can also help couples who feel stuck in limbo and do not know whether therapy, separation, or divorce makes the most sense.

That is exactly the kind of situation Discernment Counseling is designed for. The process gives both partners space to be honest without forcing either person into a decision they are not ready to make.

The three paths are: staying in the marriage as it is for now, moving toward separation or divorce, or committing to couples therapy for a defined period of time with divorce off the table.

Discernment Counseling is usually between one and six sessions. Each session is typically 90 minutes to two hours, depending on the couple and the needs of the process.

Each session includes time together as a couple and individual time with each partner. The structure allows both people to speak honestly, reflect on their own role in the relationship, and consider the possible paths forward.

No. I will not make the decision for you. My role is to guide the process, ask direct questions, help both of you look honestly at the marriage, and support you in gaining clarity about what comes next.

Discernment Counseling is not marriage repair. It may lead some couples to choose couples therapy and make a serious effort to repair the marriage. Others may choose separation or divorce.
The goal is not to guarantee a certain outcome. The goal is to help you make the decision with honesty, clarity, and accountability.
