What to Expect When You Begin Therapy
Most new clients want to know what actually happens when you begin therapy with me. This is the practical side of working with me.
How To Get Started
We begin with a brief consultation. This is a chance for you to share what’s happening, ask questions, and get a sense of whether my style fits what you need. If we both feel aligned, we schedule your first session and I’ll send you the intake paperwork.
Scheduling Your Sessions
Every client has their own needs, stories, and goals.
I offer:
- Individual therapy sessions (50 minutes)
- Couples therapy sessions (60–75 minutes)
- Couples intensives (custom length based on need)
Sessions are available online throughout Texas and in person when possible.
Most clients meet weekly or biweekly. Some start with a faster pace when things feel urgent while others prefer more space between sessions. We choose a rhythm that matches where you are and what the work requires.

What The First Sessions Look Like
During your first few sessions, you may share your entire history or catch me up slowly.
I pay attention to your tone, pacing, and the parts of your experience you skip over. These cues often tell us more than the story itself.
By session three or four, most clients feel a sense of trust, communication becomes easier, and we have a direction and a goal to work on.

How I Use Assessments In Our Work
I use assessments because they help me see what’s happening for you on a deeper level so we don’t waste time circling the surface.
For individual work, I may use screenings for mood or anxiety, attachment questionnaires, or a simple family-history map (a genogram ) to map where certain patterns began.
For couples, I often bring in relational assessments that show me how the two of you move toward or away from each other, how conflict escalates, and what’s happening underneath the arguments.
These assessments aren’t homework and you’re not performing for me. They’re simply tools I use to understand you more clearly so I can challenge you where it matters, support you where it’s needed, and help the work move faster and with more depth.
What You Can Expect Over Time
Therapy is about making meaningful shifts that show up in your daily life. Some of these changes are subtle at first: a calmer mind, a moment where you react differently than you used to, a softness where there was tension. Others changes feel bigger, like finally understanding a pattern you’ve been stuck in for years.
As we continue, you’ll begin to notice:

More understanding of your internal world

Less confusion about your reactions

More accuracy in naming what you feel

A grounded connection to yourself or your partner

Momentum, even when the work is challenging
And you may also notice that you start trusting yourself more. You speak up sooner, you catch yourself before spiraling, you repair faster with your partner, and you feel more grounded in who you are. Therapy isn’t always easy, but when it’s grounded in honesty and understanding, it becomes transformative, and the work you do in session starts to reshape the rest of your life.

How Therapy Works With Me FAQs:
Do I need to prepare anything before my first session?
No. Come as you are. I’ll guide the process and ask the questions that help us get to the heart of things. One of the goals of the first session is for you to feel supported, not overwhelmed.
Will I have to fill out long tests or questionnaires?
No. When I use assessments, they’re simple and purposeful. Most are brief, and some happen naturally through conversation. Nothing is busywork, and you’ll always know why I’m using something and how it supports the work we’re doing.
Why do you use assessments at all?
Assessments help me see the emotional and relational patterns you’ve been living with, your attachment style, your defenses, the places you get overwhelmed, and the dynamics inside your relationship. They help the work move faster and more precisely. They also give us a shared language for what’s happening internally, which deepens the work right away.
Are assessments the same as diagnosing me?
No. I’m not here to label you. Assessments help me understand how you learned to survive, not what’s “wrong” with you. They guide the direction of our work so we spend time where it actually matters.
What if I don’t know how often I should come?
We decide together. Weekly works well for most people, especially in the beginning. When things stabilize, biweekly may feel right. If there’s urgency or a crisis, we may meet more frequently. Your schedule can shift as your needs change.
Do you see individuals and couples?
Yes. I work with both. Some people come alone, some come as a couple, and some begin individually and bring their partner in later. The most important thing is that you start where you feel safe and ready.
What if my partner is hesitant about therapy?
That’s common. You can come in alone first. Sometimes one person beginning the work creates enough stability for the relationship to shift. Your growth often influences the system around you.
Do you offer online sessions?
Yes. I offer secure online therapy throughout Texas, and in-person sessions when available. Many clients prefer online because it allows for consistency, privacy, and flexibility. It also gives you access to therapy without needing to commute.
